A 2005 report by the United Nations ranked Kenya as 154th out of a list of 177 countries, in terms of life expectancy, literacy levels, and the overall Gross Domestic Product. The United Nations Human Development Report of 2009 classified 43% of Kenyans as poor (percentage of population living on less than $1 per day).
The unemployment rate in Kenya stands at 40%, according to the CIA World Fact Book, and is still on a steady rise. This is to mean that almost a half of the country is unemployed! Youth unemployment constitutes 70% of total unemployment in Kenya.
Rural zones make up 65% of the country’s total size and are also the areas hardest-hit by poverty.
Based on these facts, and inspired by the noble mission to leave a mark on the land, Landmark Development Programme (LADEP) endeavours to fully comprehend the dynamics of rural poverty, reach out to the villages, and seek to alleviate and eliminate extreme poverty through the various people-focused programmes it is initiating.
